The Verb "To Be"

hoon, hai, hain, ho - the most common verb in Urdu.

Present tense of hona (to be)

There are four forms in present tense, matched to the pronoun. There is no gender variation in present tense - only number and person.

میں ہوں
main hoonI am
ہم ہیں
hum hainwe are
تم ہو
tum hoyou (casual) are
آپ ہیں
aap hainyou (formal) are
یہ ہے / وہ ہے
yeh hai / woh haihe is / she is
یہ ہیں / وہ ہیں
yeh hain / woh hainthey are

Past tense - and gender appears

Past forms vary by gender of the subject. Masculine: tha/the. Feminine: thi/thin.

میں خوش تھا

وہ خوش تھے
