👤 Pronouns

I, you, he/she - and the three "you" registers.

The personal pronouns

Urdu has six core personal pronouns. There is no separate he/she - yeh and woh do double duty as both demonstratives and 3rd-person pronouns.

میں

ہم

تم
tumyou (casual)
آپ
aapyou (formal / plural)
یہ
yehthis / he / she (near)
وہ
wohthat / he / she (far)

Three "you"s - pick wisely

tu (تو) is intimate - used with God, very young children, or insults. This app teaches only tum and aap. Use aap with elders, in-laws, strangers, and at work. Use tum with siblings, peers, and close friends.

aap is plural-grammatically

Even when aap refers to one person, the verb takes plural conjugation: "aap kaise hain?" (not hai). This is the politeness signal.

آپ کیسے ہیں؟
Aap kaise hain? How are you? (formal, m)
تم کیسے ہو؟
Tum kaise ho?How are you? (casual, m)
