Ain

عین

Sound: aIPA /ʔ/Joins both sides

How it works

Almost silent in Urdu - acts as a vowel-carrier. The diacritic decides the sound: zer = i (ilm), zabar = a (Allah), pesh = u (umar). Found mostly in Arabic loanwords. In Arabic it's a deep throat sound; Urdu speakers usually skip that.
